The capacitor is utilized to not only start but also spin the fan. Simply stated, the capacitor generates a magnetic flux (torque) that causes the fan to revolve. Ceiling fans typically employ two capacitors in parallel series.

        I need to replace a Hampton bay ceiling fan capacitor that originally is 270 volt and 4.5 uf. I can only find 250 volt CBB61 capacitors to replace it with. Will this work being a lower voltage?

          Using a 250-volt capacitor as a replacement for a Hampton Bay ceiling fan with a 270-volt capacitor may work, but there are risks involved due to the lower voltage rating.
